West Midlands Rural Development Initiative Open For Business
Rural land-based businesses can now apply to a new £53 million funding scheme to help them improve their competitiveness and sustainability - the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE).
RDPE support, funded by DEFRA and the EU, will encourage businesses to diversify into new business areas, improve profitability, save costs, and enhance the environment.
Eligible businesses include farmers, growers, foresters, primary producers, rural tourism businesses and other small rural business or community organisations.
Bids for RDPE funding will be managed by the Rural Development Programme Team at Advantage West Midlands, and should focus on four key areas of activity:
Advantage West Midlands will be delivering the programme in partnership with Natural England and the Forestry Commission.

Local Food - £50 million grant scheme
Launched in 2007, the BIG Lottery Fund announced the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts as an Award Partner under its Changing Spaces programme. RSWT will manage Local Food and the £50 million grant scheme will be funded by the BIG Lottery Fund.
The aim is to improve health, strengthen local economies and increase sustainability through the better use of resources. Grants will be distributed to a variety of food-related projects to help make locally grown food accessible and affordable to local communities.
Grants of between £2,000 and £500,000 will be awarded to not-for-profit groups and organisations in England for activities such as growing, processing, marketing and distributing local food, as well as composting and raising awareness of the benefits of such activities. Communities will benefit from:
improved health and wellbeing through exercise and better nutrition;
strengthened local economies through the creation of social enterprises; and
more sustainability through the better use of resources.
